What to Expect at Your First Registered Massage Therapy Appointment

New to registered massage therapy? Here's what happens at your first RMT visit at Paramed, from the intake form to aftercare, so you can walk in relaxed.

Booking your first registered massage therapy (RMT) session can bring up a few questions. What should I wear? Will it hurt? How much should I talk? Here's a simple walkthrough of what a first visit at Paramed Health Collective usually looks like.

Before you arrive

When you book online you'll be asked to complete a short health history form. It helps your therapist understand what's going on, any past injuries, and anything that might change how they treat you. Try to arrive five to ten minutes early so there's no rush.

The assessment

Your RMT will start with a conversation about why you came in and what you'd like to get out of the session. Depending on your concerns, they may check your posture, range of motion or do a few simple movement tests. This is your chance to ask questions, so don't hold back.

During the treatment

  • You'll have privacy to undress to your comfort level and get under the sheets. Only the area being worked on is uncovered.
  • Pressure should never feel unbearable. Let your therapist know at any point if you want more or less.
  • Talk as much or as little as you like. Plenty of people use the time to switch off.

After your session

Your therapist may suggest stretches, strengthening exercises or self-care you can do at home, plus a recommendation for when to come back. Drink some water, move gently, and pay attention to how your body feels over the next day or two.
